October 4, 2006: Aviation industry faces pilot training challenge.

The aviation industry faces a major challenge in pilot training, Nick Sabatini, FAA associate administrator for aviation safety, said Wednesday.

"The older pilots among us have spent 10 years or more acquiring airmanship skills in incrementally more advanced aircraft," he said. "The younger pilots are moving much faster from initial training to highly technical aircraft. The challenge the industry faces is making sure those pilots get sufficient training in basic airmanship. This is stuff you can't learn by reading or watching. You have to be in the cockpit and have the experience. It's critical."

Intensive simulator training is essential to helping build skills rapidly, he said. And that training must be designed to mirror live experience to be effective.

Sabatini was in Wichita for the annual Bombardier Safety Standdown, a four-day seminar devoted to safety training for aviators.
